Welcome To The Fighting Fourth

Welcome to the website of the 4th U.S. Infantry, an American Civil War reenactment group based in the United Kingdom.

We are a Union regiment of the Southern Skirmish Association which aims to bring the history of the American Civil War to life with battles, drill displays, and a taste of 19th century camp life. For more information about what we do to entertain and educate please visit the About Us page.

The American Civil War engulfed North America in 1861 after numerous States seceded (withdrew from) the United States of America following the election of President Abraham Lincoln. These States proclaimed themselves the Confederate States of America (the Confederacy) while the remaining States staying loyal to the Union. Between the first shots fired in April 1861 and the surrender of the bulk of the Confederate Army in May 1865 hundreds of thousands of soldiers, including immigrants from Britain, were killed or wounded in some of the bloodiest battles in U.S. history.

We portray the 4th U.S. Infantry regiment which was part of the Old Army – regiments that existed from before the Civil War began. These “Regular” regiments were instrumental in the early years of the war where their experience and discipline formed the backbone of the Union Army while the fledgeling volunteer regiments found their feet. By the end of the war there was little difference and most Regular regiments were no longer combat effective, heavily depleted by years of heavy fighting. The 4th U.S. however continued on as the Headquarters Colour Guard for the Army Of The Potomac and General Ulysses S. Grant. If you’d like to know more about the real 4th U.S. then head over to the History page to learn more about the regiment and its honours.

You can also check out the great photos in our Gallery which showcase our previous events. If you’d to like to see us in the flesh then our Events page can tell you what events and festivals we’re attending next. We mainly operate in the south of England but do occasionally venture into East Anglia and the Midlands. Finally you can always join us and help bring the sights, sounds, and yes some of the smells of the American Civil War into the 21st century. Visit our Recruitment page for more info and help us bring history alive!
